Presenting a report, Chairman of a Senate Committee on the bill, Umaru Dahiru, said the introduction of the bill was timely and would protect and punish electronic fraud and other cyber related crime in electronic transactions.

“The Bill when fully implemented would bring about a sustained strategic, tactical and operational approach to the fight against cybercrime,” he said.

He added that the protection of critical national infrastructure in any jurisdiction was necessary as it was in line with the need for a broader coverage of cyber-related crimes and the emerging global trends of cyber-terrorism.

The committee unanimously approved the bill, after some amendments, when it was put into vote by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the session.

“With this action today, friends and international communities will take the country seriously in its efforts to combat cybercrime.”
