UEFA has denied reports that it intends to host a competition which would mirror the NBA’s all-star game and put together the best players from different leagues for a competition or match.
El Mundo Deportivo claimed last week that UEFA had plans in place for an all-star game which would put the best players from various leagues together as teams to compete in a tournament. Football enthusiasts around the world were excited at the prospect of seeing Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez team up on one side while Sergio Aguero, Wayne Rooney and Eden Hazard were a possibility to team up to. Even though the reports were unconfirmed, there was still a lot of excitement. A spokesperson for UEFA however confirmed yesterday that such plans were not even in place and there was no discussion to that effect at the UEFA executive council meeting. This announcement dashes the hopes of football fans around the world who would love to see some of the world’s very best players compete as part of the same team.
The opportunity is not yet closed as any big multi-national company could organize and sponsor such a match. It would be good publicity for whoever can get their names on adverts and both clubs could generate a lot in television rights and entry fees.
