Atletico Madrid were made to work hard in defense by a relentless Real Madrid side but the La Liga champions showed great tenacity and willingness going forward to earn themselves a 2-0 win at the VIncente Calderon in the first leg of their round of 16 clash.

The penalty was dispatched by Raul Garcia despite Keylor Navas guessing the right direction and getting close to the ball. Real Madrid started to press for an equalizer but struggled to break down a dogged and very organized Atletico Madrid defense. Despite bringing on Ronaldo who started from the bench, Real Madrid found themselves two goals behind in the 78th minute as Giminez rose to meet a corner and give Atletico Madrid a two goal lead. Atletico held on despite a late onslaught from Real Madrid to claim a two nil victory.
Atletico Madrid would take a two nil lead to the Santiago bernabeau in two weeks’ time when both teams would clash again for the second leg.
