Everton returned to European football in fashionable style as they dispatched Wolfsburg of Germany with relative ease at the Goodison Park.
Everton controlled the game from the beginning to the end and would be glad to have come away with a result both the team and the manager can be proud of. Ricardo Rodriguez’s own goal in the 15th minute got the home side on their way and they continued to put the Germans on the back foot and all the pressure paid off in the 46th minute as Seamus Coleman made it two nil after Mirallas’ shot was parried into the path of Baines by the Wolfsburg goalkeeper and the England left back lashed a ball across to Coleman. Only one minute into the second half, McGeady was fouled just outside the box but the referee pointed to the spot much to the disappointment of the Wolfsburg players and fans and Baines had no problem dispatching the resulting spot kick sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Mirallas latched on to Eto’o’s through ball to run clean through and score the fourth before Ricardo Rodgriguez scored a consolation goal for Wolfsburg with a beautifully taken free kick.
Everton would look to carry on in Europe the way they started as they can’t seem to be stopped from scoring so far this season.
