I remember the first time I took note of Luis Suarez, it was at the 2010 world cup in South Africa; Ghana were on the cusp of greatness, they looked set to become the first African team to progress past the quarter finals at the world cup. The West Africans pile pressure on a shaky Uruguay defense and in extra time, Adiiyah headed a cross and the ball was destined for the net before Luis Suarez handled the ball, preventing Ghana from scoring and getting sent off. Asamoah Gyan missed the subsequent penalty and Uruguay beat Ghana on penalties to advance and Suarez became a national hero.
A few months later, Luis Suarez joined Liverpool from Ajax in a 23 million pound deal. The English press blew up a player who was already a man of mythic proportions in Holland. The Uruguayan had scored 111 goals in 159 matches for Ajax and was the club captain but he did not come without his disciplinary issues. Suarez had bitten Otman Bakkal in November 2010 and he had a history of red and yellow cards form his Gronigen and Ajax days still hunting him.
Suarez came into the premier league and his talent and exciting style of play was clear for all to see. Occasionally accused of being selfish, Suarez struck up and impressive combination with Gerrard and managed four goals in 13 games for Liverpool. In the 2011/2012 season, Suarez’s goal scoring skills didn’t land him in the papers, his insolent ways however did as the Uruguayan was banned for eight matches and fined 40000 pounds for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.
In the returning fixture, Suarez refused to shake Patrice Evra’s hand and went on to score despite Liverpool losing the match. Later in the season, Suarez was banned again for making obscene gestures at Fulham fans Suarez finished the season with 11 goals. In the 2012/2013 season, Suarez blew up in everyone’s face banging in goals for fun. The season did not come without it’s challenges as Suarez handled the ball before scoring the winner in an FA cup tie causing wide spread criticism, the criticism further spurred Suarez who banged in more goals. on the 21st of April 2013, Luis Suarez bit Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea during Liverpool and Chelsea’s clash, causing an upheaval in English football and prompting the former Ajax man to be banned for ten matches.
Despite missing ten games, Suarez finished the season with 23 league goals. Before the 2013/2014 season, Suarez made it clear that he wanted to leave Liverpool but turned around and stayed, helping the club finish third, banging in 31 goals, becoming the first Liverpool player to score 30 league goals. Suarez however saved his problems for the World Cup where he again bit a player, this time Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini.
The Uruguayan was banned for 4 months and fined, during the ban, Suarez would join Barcelona and go on to form a formidable attacking trip with Suarez and Messi. Suarez once again got in the highlights as he was accused of biting Demichelis is Barcelona’s champions league clash with Manchester City.
Suarez ability is unquestioned and that has made him a phenomenal star but the Barcelona man is more popular for his lack of discipline which has made him the most dynamic football star since Eric Cantona.
