1010062_gallery Thursday night is famous for the airing of the UEFA Europa League.

Liverpool played Besiktas last Thursday at Anfield and managed to wrangle out a win, as a result of a Balotelli penalty.

They went into the return leg in Turkey with the advantage. To favour the premier league and in search of Champions league football, key players were benched. This told on the match, as the Reds struggled and conceded in the second half after onslaught of attacks from the Turkish side.

Demba Ba missed a crucial chance to put matters to bed in the dying minutes of the second half, as the match went into extra time. Besiktas pressed and stretched the Liverpool defence thin, but saw every opportunity kept out by Mignolet.

A match already destined for penalty shootouts, both teams were set for a tension filled shootout.

The Turkish side came prepared though, as every penalty shot was taken in class. Lovren had the chance to keep Liverpool in the competition, but lost his penalty and dashed the hopes of Liverpool advancing in the competition.

Liverpool face Manchester City on Sunday in the premier league.
