GOODNEWS: ASUP Suspends Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended its decision to embark on an indefinite strike which was scheduled to commence, Today, February 24, after about five hours meeting with the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, and members of the House of Representatives Committee on Education.


According to the Union, the decision was sequel to “fruitful” discussions it had with government and other stakeholders.


It would be recalled that the top echelons of the ASUP planned on going on an indefinite strike, following the expiration of two weeks’ notice given to the federal government to implement the agreement it reached with the union.


It was learnt that Mr. Shekarau ordered the immediate withdrawal of the circular suspending the controversial CONTISS 15 and restoration of union activities in the the Federal Polytechnic, Oko in Anambra State and the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State.


The Public Relations Officer of ASUP, Mr. Clement Chairman, told journalists on Tuesday after the union’s meeting at the National Assembly that its negotiation team would relay the outcome of the deliberations to the National Executive Council.
