European Clubs Want FIFA To Pay Compensation For Winter World Cup

Following a meeting today, the special taskforce set up by the FIFA executive committee on the Qatar 2022 world cup, decided that the world cup take place in the winter due to the climatic conditions of Qatar.

European clubs via the European Clubs Association (ECA) have requested that FIFA foot the bills they would have to bear owing to the inconvenience t-the winter World Cup would cost them. Most European clubs have their seasons about midway during the winter and the Champions league is also usually in full flight. Those tournaments would have to be suspended and their schedules adjusted in order for their players to properly prepare and participate at the World cup and the clubs are not willing to bear the cost. “Today’s recommendation of the Task Force regarding the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar does not come as a surprise; it was rather expected,” said ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in a statement. “For the football family the rescheduling of the FIFA World Cup 2022 presents a difficult and challenging task. All match calendars across the world will have to accommodate such tournament in 2022-23, which requires everyone’s willingness to compromise. However, the European clubs and leagues cannot be expected to bear the costs for such rescheduling. We expect the clubs to be compensated for the damage that a final decision would cause.” European football clubs are most likely going to suffer most from the shift in date of the world cup.

While you might understand for the European clubs demanding compensation you also have to put it in mind that these clubs have seven years to prepare and come up with ways of making the winter world cup work, including kicking off their seasons earlier.
