Match Called Off after Russian Goalkeeper Hit By Flare

Russia’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Montenegro was cancelled after Russia’s goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was hit by a flare which was thrown into the pitch from the crowd.

Just 20 seconds into the game, Akinfeev was hit by a flare from the crowd in Montenegro as he got ready to get into the game. The 28 year old fell to the floor and officials and players rushed to the side of the former Fulham goalkeeper who had to be stretchered off the pitch. The players were immediately led off the pitch and the game was suspended.

Montenegro football fans have a history of violent and extreme conduct but this might just have pused the line and UEFA might have to look into the incident. Akinfeev has been certified as stable by the medical team in Montenegro but might not take part in any other international match during the FIFA match week.
